On 21 January, a seminar dedicated to the 90th anniversary (celebrated on 7 January) of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Leader of the Accelerator Complex of the NICA Megascience Project and the world expert in accelerator physics Igor Meshkov was held in the VBLHEP Conference Hall.

Igor Meshkov is a world-famous specialist in accelerator physics, one of the authors of the electronic cooling technique, whose ideas are used in the major accelerator centres in the world. Since 1993, he has been working in JINR, was the Chief Engineer of the Institute and today, under his scientific supervision, a megaproject - the NICA superconducting heavy ion collider is implemented. Igor Meshkov has trained 15 Candidates and 5 Doctors of Sciences, is the author of more than 500 publications and the winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation and the Prize of the European Physical Society.

The participants of the seminar were greeted by JINR Vice Director Vladimir Kekelidze, Chief Engineer of the NICA Accelerator Complex Evgeny Syresin, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov, as well as NICA Project Leaders Alexey Sidorin and Andrey Butenko. All of them emphasized the huge contribution of I.N. Meshkov in science, development of NICA and the education of young leaders.

At the seminar, focus was on the role of the hero of the day in the development of the basic facility of FLNP - IREN pulsed neutron source. I.N. Meshkov ensured the key cooperation of JINR with the Novosibirsk INP in the design and manufacture of the LUE-200 linear accelerator - the heart of IREN.

The first leader of the IREN project, a leading researcher (FLNP) W.I. Furman, as well as Deputy Head of Department (VBLHEP) A.P. Sumbaev and Head of Sector (VBLHEP) V.V. Kobets spoke about Igor Meshkov's contribution to the development and commissioning of the accelerator, as well as his help in overcoming financial and organizational hardships of the 1990s. As a token of gratitude, they awarded him the Commemorative Insignia "For the defense of IREN".
