Neutron analysis and Artificial Intelligence help decode "DNA" of medieval ceramics

Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR, together with colleagues from Russia and Egypt, have determined the elemental composition of 149 ceramic fragments from the 13th–17th centuries, found in Volga Bulgaria, Moscow, Byzantium, Khorezm, and other regions.

To study these medieval artefacts, researchers used neutron activation analysis at the IBR-2 Reactor and machine learning algorithms.

The work can lay the foundation for future geochemical research and the development of new methods for classifying archaeological finds.
