Albert Popov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, one of the oldest employees of the JINR Laboratory of Neutron Physics, a renowned Soviet and Russian experimental physicist, and a founding member of the Laboratory, passed away on December 7

ALBERT B. POPOV
February 18, 1934 – December 7, 2025

Albert Popov began his career at the JINR Laboratory of Neutron Physics in March 1958 and rose through the ranks, from senior laboratory assistant with a higher education to leading research fellow.

A.B. Popov was a recognized expert in the field of neutron nuclear physics. Working on neutron resonance spectroscopy, Albert Popov made a significant contribution to the global neutron database. Together with colleagues from Obninsk, he completed a series of unique studies on the fission of aligned nuclei by neutrons, which became part of the gold standard of nuclear physics. In experiments with polarized neutron beams at the IBR-30, the fission widths of p-wave neutron resonances were first extracted. For many years, he was a leader in research into the electromagnetic structure of the neutron.

Albert Popov always held an active and principled stance in life. He was the last secretary of the CPSU Party Committee at JINR, a member of the Dubna City Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, and a regular contributor to the newspaper "Kommunist Dubny."

A. B. Popov was always distinguished by exceptional integrity, kindness, and a passion for scientific truth. He enjoyed well-deserved respect and authority among those who knew him.

Albert Popov left behind fond memories among his friends and family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The bright memory of Albert Popov will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to work and befriend him. We express our sincere condolences to his family and friends on the occasion of his passing.

The FLNP Directorate, colleagues, and friends.

The funeral service for Albert Popov will take place on Wednesday, December 10, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the funeral hall of the Medical and Sanitary Unit No. 9. A shuttle bus will be provided to and from the Sergiev-Demidovskoye Cemetery. The wake will be held at the Dubna Restaurant, 8 Veksler Street.
