FLNP Directorate announces with deep regret that on 14 July, at the age of 91, one of the oldest employees of the Laboratory Yury Taran passed away

YURY TARAN 26.03.1934 – 14.07.2024

After completing his studies at Moscow State University in 1958, Yury Taran started working at FLNP JINR. For many years, he was widely engaged in scientific research in the field of nuclear physics using polarized neutrons that allowed him to successfully defend his candidate's and later, doctoral theses.

In the early 1990s, he was engaged in a new area - the use of thermal neutron diffraction to meet various issues in materials science. To carry out such investigations, an appropriate experimental technique and a new equipment were needed, in the development of which Yury Taran took an active part. His talent, experience and systematic approach allowed him to quickly master a new research area and to obtain significant results in this area. Thanks to the efforts of Yury Taran, this topic has become one of the important research areas at FLNP. Experiments carried out at the IBR-2 reactor by external users and cooperation with various organizations in Russia and abroad allowed to expand the area of neutron diffraction in materials science and to develop fruitful scientific relations.

In the membership of the writing teams, Yury Taran was not than once awarded JINR prizes based on the results of his scientific research. In 1997, he was awarded the Medal “In Memory of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow”, in 2011 - the departmental insignia for the paper “Veteran of Nuclear Energy and Industry”, in 2006, he was awarded the title “Honorary Employee of JINR”.

The memory of Yury Taran will be preserved for a long time at FLNP JINR.
