"HTS solenoid for 5T with an aperture of 50 mm with increased stability for liquid free cooling"

Dorofeev G.L., Drobin V.M., Lebedev V.A. (VBLHEP, JINR, Dubna)

A solenoid with a winding with an internal diameter of 50 mm and a length of 100 mm made of G2 HTS tape with a width of 4 mm without insulation was manufactured and tested in helium vapor over a wide temperature range and in liquid nitrogen. The magnetic field in the center of the solenoid reaches 5.6 T at a temperature of about 15 K at a current of 200 A, which is close to the current of a short tape sample under these conditions. Direct current energy losses at a field of 5 T in stationary conditions do not exceed 1 mW per 1 cm of the length of the solenoid winding. The absence of electrical insulation between the layers of HTS tape provides increased resistance of the solenoid to transition to a non-superconducting state. In addition, a technology has been developed for manufacturing windings from HTS tape without insulation between the layers. A pilot set of technological equipment for the manufacture of HTS solenoid windings has been developed, assembled and put into operation.
The advanced technology allows for scaling: the manufacture of solenoids of any length and aperture. In particular, the thickness of the solenoid winding for 20 T manufactured using the developed technology may be less than 40 mm.
